Anthony Marshall, who plundered his mother Brooke Astor’s fortune and forced the beloved philanthropist to spend her final years languishing on a urine-stained couch, is dead at age 90.Marshall, who suffered from Parkinson’s and congestive heart failure, died early Sunday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, his defense attorney Ken Warner said Monday.
In a paid obituary for the former Marine and diplomat, Marshall’s wife, Charlene, called him “a very great man.”
It ended with the widow declaring, “Semper Fi my Tonyness, Your beloved Charlene.”
Nowhere in the obituary, which appeared in The New York Times, was there any mention of Astor; Marshall’s twin sons, Alexander and Philip, or the scandal that ruined her husband’s reputation.
Instead, Charlene Marshall listed the stepchildren and step-grandchildren “who showered him with love,” mentioned that Marshall fought at Iwo Jima in World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart, and traced his diplomatic career.
Philip Marshall, whose elder abuse accusations against his father led to the investigation that resulted in Marshall’s conviction last year for defrauding Astor’s $185 million estate, said Charlene made no attempt to contact him.
“The fact I first heard the sad news of my father’s death from the press speaks volumes about the devastating effect elder abuse can have on families,” Philip Marshall said in a statement to the Daily News.
Brooke Astor died in 2007 at 105.
And the six-month trial of Marshall and his lawyer pal Francis Morrissey stripped the veneer off one of New York’s most famous blue blood families.

They were convicted of swiping $60 million — money that was earmarked for charity — from a then-101-year-old Astor by getting the Alzheimer’s-afflicted grande dame to sign will updates. The allegations were astonishing. Astor was considered the first lady of New York philanthropy, and was known for always being proper, and looking and dressing her best.
She was awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Bill Clinton in 1998.
But in the years that followed, her son cut back on her care, convincing her she was going broke, prosecutors said.
While Astor lived in a filthy Park Ave. duplex and slept in a dirty nightgown, Marshall blew his mother’s dough on his third wife, Charlene.

He denied any wrongdoing and was eventually sentenced to one to three years in prison. He was sprung for medical reasons after serving just three months. He spent his final months with Charlene in their Upper East Side townhouse.
In a statement, Warner said Marshall died “knowing he was deeply loved by his wife, Charlene, who as always was at his side.”
“In the end I hope he is remembered for his integrity and decency, not for the injustices he suffered,” Warner said.
