Honesty wasn’t the best policy for an estate lawyer who strung along a grieving family for more than a year after he misplaced a dead man’s will — even going so far as to forge a fake receipt, prosecutors charged on Wednesday.
James Robbins, 62, pleaded not guilty to possession of a forged instrument and offering a false instrument for filing after he allegedly submitted a fake receipt to Manhattan Surrogate’s Court in 2014, according to the Manhattan DA.
“For more than a year and a half, the defendant made one false statement after another to the decedent's family,” Assistant DA Jaime Hickey-Mendoza said in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Robbins — to throw off the family — allegedly told the kin that the will he drafted might be published in the New York Law Journal.
He also explained delays in case progress by saying the assigned judge was ill and that the case had been transferred, Hickey-Mendoza said.
Prosecutors said Robbins did not profit from the incident and that the family was not even billed for his faulty services.
It was not immediately clear why Robbins allegedly flubbed the job and his attorney James Schiff declined to comment after the arraignment.
Robbins was released on his own recognizance for the night by Justice Maxwell Wiley but was ordered to return to court Thursday so $5,000 bail can be posted on his behalf by bondsman Ira Judelson.

A city welfare worker scammed her own daughter out of a $48,000 trust fund left by her late father, who was tragically shot to death during a robbery in Florida in 2006, according to a new lawsuit.
“I want what’s mine,” fumed Vanessa Nieves, 21.
She learned late last year that her mother, Gloria Torres, allegedly tricked her into signing over the insurance money that she was supposed to receive at 18.
Nieves told Justice Rita Mella in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court on Friday that her mother presented her with documents in 2011. Torres convinced her daughter that the paperwork would simply freeze the account until she was 21, Nieves said.
Nieves agreed to sign the papers because she wanted to save the funds to pay for her education.
The Mercy College psych major told the judge, “I was under the impression that I was not closing the account, but extending it.”
Then in December, when she went to withdraw the funds from Chase Bank, she was told by a clerk that her mother had deposited the funds into her own account and closed her daughter’s account, according to a court statement by Nieves’ aunt Chassity Gonzalez.
Torres, who makes $35,000 a year as an eligibility specialist for the Human Resources Administration, was a no-show at court. “I refuse to give you any information,” Torres told The Post when contacted by telephone. The judge issued an order that Torres file paperwork within 30 days explaining what happened to her daughter’s money.

​A Manhattan landlord says he was shocked to find that the office space he rented out in Murray Hill was being used to host wild sex parties.
Laurence Gluck ​filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court Wednesday, saying he ​rented ​the space to Bytelair Inc., ​only to discover that instead of pushing papers the corporation​ was throwing illegal sex parties for transsexual, transvestite and cross-dress​ing participants.
Gluck’s company, the ironically named Hole in One Associates LP, rented the sixth floor of 12 E. 32nd St. to Bytelair in December for “general office and meeting space,” his suit says. ​​
Shortly after Bytelair moved in​,​ other building tenants started complaining about “excessive noise coming from the subject premises which continued until early morning hours on Friday and Saturday nights,” the suit says
The landlord’s reps were horrified when they visited the floor and heard people “engaging in sexual activity” behind hanging sheets, without a copy machine or stapler in sight.
Tlust.com and Daytimet.com advertise “day time play part[ies] for Tgirls (ts/tv/dc) & those who love them.” There are two upcoming parties listed on the websites for Thurs., Feb. 5 from noon to 8 p.m and Sat., Feb. 7 from 3 to 8 p.m.
Gluck says the parties are held in his office building, where participants have accosted fellow tenants at all hours of the day and night asking “coming to the party?”
“Tenants are now fearful for their safety and the safety of their loved ones when entering and exiting the building,” according to the filing.
On its website TLust Tgurl Play Parties says it’s a “private social club held in a discrete midtown loft with private and group play areas, complimentary condoms/lube, coat check, lockers, complimentary soft drinks and snacks and ​​of course you can bring your own bottle (liquor.)”
Gluck wants the sex club out– claiming it violates buildings codes, health department codes and “likely a variety of criminal statutes as well.”
Emails sent to addresses listed on the two websites were not immediately returned.
