Biglaw Trainee Posts Islamist Rant On YouTube In The Wake Of Charlie Hebdo Attack

je suis charlie 879x539Earlier this week, following the violent attack on the French satirical weekly paper Charlie Hebdo, a trainee at a Magic Circle firm decided to take to YouTube to post a 21-minute extremist rant where he denounced Western ideologies and called on his “brothers and sisters” to stand against the concept of freedom of speech that “the kuffar” (i.e., infidels) support.
What is this fellow’s name, and which law firm does he work for?
In an exclusive report first published by Legal Cheek, and later picked up by Roll On Friday, we found out that the would-be solicitor who preached to his YouTube audience that Islam was “superior” to Western culture goes by the name of Aysh Chaudhry, and he began working at Clifford Chance about six months ago.
(Why do our most inflammatory posts come from Clifford Chance? See here, here, and here. Perhaps the firm is due for some hardcore introspection.)
According to Chaudhry’s LinkedIn page, which has since been taken down, he has a law degree from London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies, which he received with first-class honors. Prior to working at Clifford Chance, he interned at Slaughter & May, White & Case, Freshfields, and BLP. Legal Cheek managed to snag, redact, and blur this photo before Chaudhry removed his profile on the site.

Aysh Chaudhry’s YouTube rant, which he quickly made private after its discovery, was broadcast predominantly in English, but sprinkled here and there with Arabic words. This is a brief snippet of the message Chaudhry delivered in his video:
Brothers and sisters, we would not be here had it not been for the fact that the kuffar had gone to our lands and killed our people and raped and pillaged our resources.
This, brothers and sisters, is what we need to understand. We need to move away from this apologetic tone and to have confidence in Islam because we are enslaved otherwise.
What does Clifford Chance have to say about its trainee’s video? We imagine that the partners can’t be too pleased, especially since Chaudhry’s rant has reportedly “caused concern among lawyers at the firm.” Here’s a statement from a firm spokeswoman:
The views expressed in this video are personal and not those of Clifford Chance. The firm is committed to establishing an inclusive culture where people with diverse backgrounds and views work effectively together and feel confident to develop their potential.
We ask our people to at all times consider how their personal conduct and actions may affect those around them, their professional reputation and that of the firm.
Clifford Chance didn’t comment on whether Aysh Chaudhry would retain his employment with the firm, but if he’s allowed to keep his job, he’ll likely owe it to the Western concept of freedom of speech that he despised enough to decry in his video.

Man Fakes Coma To Get Out Of Going To Court

Going to court is a huge pain in the ass.
Come on, who really wants to do that? Nobody — especially not the guy who pretended to be in a coma for two years, just so he could avoid having to go in the first place.
Who is the man who pulled off this most impressive feat?

Here’s the scoop, courtesy of the Daily Mail:
A fraudster who pretended to be in a coma for two years was caught by police going on shopping trips and holidays with his family.
Conman Alan Knight of Swansea, South Wales, faked being in a vegetative state after he scammed his next door neighbour out of £40,000.
The 47-year-old tried to beat justice by claiming he was a quadriplegic – his family said he was hooked up to oxygen and had no movement from the neck down.
As it turns out, Knight was caught because he thought he could just walk around in public. FYI, Mr. Knight, quadriplegics can’t do that, but we suppose you live and you learn (he’s the one with the shaved head):

What’s the worst excuse you’ve ever given to get out of going to court?

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- A University of Alabama Greek organization offered incentives to members in exchange for voting in the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education election, according to an email obtained by AL.com Monday.

The email, sent to sorority members residing in District 4 from a ranking member of the chapter's executive board, encourages members to vote for Cason Kirby and Lee Garrison in exchange for incentives including free drinks at two local bars and limousine transportation to the polls.
Kirby challenged incumbent Kelly Horwitz for the District 4 seat and Garrison ran for board chair against Denise Hills. Both were elected by slim margins in Tuesday's election, though neither Horwitz nor Hills conceded the race by the end of the day.
(All punctuation and emphasis is found in the original email.)
"In a list that was e-mailed to me this weekend, y'all are the only [members] registered in the specific district that are allowed to vote," the email states. "Cason Kirby, a past SGA president of the University of Alabama is running for the City Board of Education, and Lee Garrison a UA Alum is also running."
"They would really appreciate/need your vote to win this election. It's going to be really tight, and it is SO IMPORTANT that they get the Greek Vote. I told both of them that I would do my best to make sure that I got every Chi O that was registered to the polls. There is a big incentive for you going as well!!"
The email goes on to list five "incentives," including that both the sorority and individuals who vote would receive points to go toward UA's Panhellenic and the sorority's in-house point systems, which reward participation within the system.
In addition, the author states "they rented out Innisfree and Moe's" -- two downtown Tuscaloosa bars -- and wristbands good for one free drink at each venue and free cover would be made available to members who showed an "I Voted" sticker to the sorority representative.
On Tuesday night, many Innisfree patrons wore matching wristbands, though no wristbands were offered at the front gate. Cason Kirby was seen celebrating his election with friends and family.
A variety of vehicles, including stretch limousines and a large passenger bus, were seen along sorority row Tuesday, shuttling passengers to and from the District 4 polling station several blocks away.
Students have been more vocally involved in this year's school board campaign than in years past, with the College Democrats canvassing on behalf of Kelly Horwitz and several sororities and fraternities displaying Cason Kirby placards in their front lawns.

On Friday, TV station WVUA reported that 10 unrelated people are registered to vote in a single family home in District 4.
WVUA reports that a resident in the home said his "fraternity pledge brothers" are using the house as a residence to vote, but don't actually live inside the home.
