Illinois Humanities Council board member resigns in protest of auctioning a dinner with Bill Ayers

A month after the Illinois Humanities Council auctioned off a dinner with controversial Vietnam-era radical Bill Ayers as part of a fundraiser, a board member has resigned over the matter.

Gary Koch, an instructor at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, said he decided to leave the board because he could not support hosting such an event.

"I … find it reprehensible to be associated with individuals who advocated blowing up police stations and federal buildings," Koch wrote in his resignation letter. "I would be a hypocrite to look the other way on this."

In December, the Humanities Council sold a dinner with Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, as part of an online fundraiser. The auction item was purchased by conservative correspondent Tucker Carlson for $2,500.

On Wednesday, Kristina Valaitis, executive director of the council, declined to discuss Koch's resignation.

"Why people … choose to end their service is an internal matter," Valaitis said, "and we're not going to make a public comment about anyone's reasons."

The Humanities Council is an educational nonprofit group that organizes lectures, presentations, performances, exhibits and cultural events.

Ayers is a retired University of Illinois at Chicago professor and co-founder of the Weather Underground, a radical anti-war group responsible for bombings in 1969 and the 1970s. He has written extensively about his past.

Editor's note: In an age where corruption in our courts and institutions is rampant, it is refreshing to view a man of integrity such as Gary Koch. Way to go Gary! You are now honorary "Shark of the Month". Lucius Verenus, Schoolmaster, ProbateSharks.com
