Emperor greets public, wishes them a better year
The Emperor used his annual New Year greetings to the public to say that he hopes 2012 will be a better year for the Japanese people as the country recovers from last year's earthquake and tsunami.
The Emperor addressed thousands of well-wishers from the balcony of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Monday.
He and other members of the imperial family waved from the balcony 3 times during the morning.
More than 8,000 members of the public had braved the cold to enter the palace grounds when the main gate was opened at 9:30 AM. More than 42,000 had entered the palace grounds by noon.
