Police thank American TV personality for help in anticrime campaign
TOKYO, Nov. 18, Kyodo
The National Police Agency offered Dave Spector, an American TV producer and personality, a letter of appreciation Friday for his contribution in its campaign against human trafficking and child abuse.
Spector acts as an official spokesmodel for a hotline system set up by the agency which accepts information on human trafficking and child abuse cases on an anonymous basis. He appeared in a poster for the campaign and spoke on TV programs to introduce the system.
''It's really nice to 'turn myself in' to the NPA for such a good occasion,'' Spector said after receiving the certificate of appreciation from Mitsuaki Iwase, chief of the NPA's Community Safety Bureau.
The Chicago native also said he hoped the poster will spark people's interest in the system.
The hotline system has been operated by a private organization since 2007 on consignment by the NPA and it now accepts such reports online, the police said, adding that this year they have received 955 reports as of late September.
According to his company's website, Spector first came to Japan as a producer for American Broadcasting Co. in 1983 and has been working as a reporter in Japan for many U.S. and British TV companies including NBC, CBS and BBC.
