Emperor discharged from hospital after pneumonia treatment
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Emperor Akihito was discharged from the University of Tokyo Hospital on Thursday afternoon, 18 days after being admitted to the hospital on Nov. 6 and receiving treatment for bronchial pneumonia, the Imperial Household Agency said.
His fever and cough had almost disappeared by Wednesday, but the emperor will cancel his official duties for the rest of this week as his physicians advised that the 77-year-old monarch rest for at least several days at the Imperial Palace to heal, the agency said.
The emperor, who appeared at the entrance of the hospital at around 2 p.m. accompanied by doctors and nurses, thanked visitors and patients who happened to be there and saw him off. He then returned to the Imperial Palace by car with Empress Michiko.
The agency "should consider (the emperor's) health more than ever, but there also are important duties and finding the right balance will be another issue," said Grand Steward Shingo Haketa.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a press conference separately, "I was extremely worried, but I'm relieved for now," expressing hope that the emperor recovers speedily.
The agency has said mycoplasma bacteria must have been responsible for the emperor's bronchial pneumonia, based on his symptoms, including a persistent fever and cough.
The doctors administered several kinds of antibiotics to the emperor, whose temperature rose to nearly 39C at one point.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Emperor Akihito has left the hospital after being treated for a high fever and mild bronchial pneumonia.
Akihito, 77, left University of Tokyo Hospital on Thursday. He had been admitted on Nov. 6.
His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, took over his official duties while he was ill. Palace officials said Akihito would resume his duties as soon as his health permits.
Akihito ascended the throne after his father, Hirohito, died in 1989. Since the end of World War II in 1945, Japan's emperor has a largely ceremonial function as the "symbol of the nation."
