Gemba says Japan open to dialogue with Iran

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba has stressed that Japan remains open to dialogue with Iran, despite a plan to reduce crude oil imports from the country in line with US sanctions.

Gemba said on Wednesday that Japan will cooperate with the United States and the international community to impose effective sanctions against Iran.

The US has decided to stem Iran's crude oil trade to counter the country's continuing nuclear development.

Gemba added that Japan is discussing with the US how the sanctions could be made more effective, as well as how to avoid a negative impact on the global economy and a surge in crude oil prices.

Gemba revealed that he sent a letter to Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi last month, urging the country to give up its nuclear program.

He said Japan aims to maintain pressure on Iran while keeping a channel open for talks with the country.
