Lee to urge Japan to resolve comfort women issue

Lee to urge Japan to resolve comfort women issue

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has urged Japan to take action toward resolving issues involving Korean women who worked at brothels for Japanese soldiers during World War Two.

Lee arrived in Japan on Saturday and spoke with about 300 South Koreans residing in Osaka.

He said Japan and South Korea must maintain a better relationship than with any other country, given the current state of the world.

Lee added that the so-called "comfort women" issue will continue to be a burden for Japan if it is unable to resolve it.

He said settling the issue while the women are alive would be a great help for the future of the 2 countries, urging Japan to take a positive step.

South Korea has been calling for bilateral talks on the issue, following the ruling by its Constitutional Court in August that it is unconstitutional for the government not to negotiate on compensation for the women.

Japan, on the other hand, maintains that the issue has already been settled.

Lee is expected to mention the issue in some way and urge Japan to respond during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda scheduled for Sunday in Kyoto.
