Hosono visits Fukushima Daiichi plant
Nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono has thanked 150 workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant for their efforts during the 9 months since the accident.
Hosono visited the plant on Saturday, following the government's announcement that the reactors had been brought to a state of cold shutdown.
He said the difficult work of decommissioning the reactors over more than 30 years lies ahead, and asked the workers to switch attitudes, create a system that would allow the work to be carried out continuously, and make steady progress.
Following the meeting, Hosono told reporters that the government will play an increasingly important role in carrying out the decommissioning work over the medium to long term, and that its focus will shift to measures to be taken outside the plant.
He said what the sufferers want most are the clearing away of radioactive materials, protection of their health, and moving back to their homes as soon as possible.
Hosono said the government has not been able to fully deliver the desired results in all aspects, but that it is important to take action that will lead to those results.
