Two residents of northwest suburban Wonder Lake have been charged with stealing more than $100,000 from a 96-year-old McHenry County resident, officials said today.

Timothy W. Zink, 59, and Rosemary Zink, 58, of the 2800 block of West Chestnut Drive, were arrested last Thursday and charged with unlawful financial exploitation of an elderly person, according to a press release from McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren today.

According to the release, a 96-year-old resident of McHenry County had been hospitalized in July of 2011; as part of that hospitalization, it was determined that the individual needed a hearing aid.

After the person was discharged and then went to the bank to get money for the hearing aid, the account totaled only $30. Someone had "unlawfully and without permission" removed $140,000 from the account during the past year, police said.

The subsequent investigation led to the Zinks, according to the release. Their bond was set at $40,000; they appear to have posted their bonds because, according to McHenry County jail officials, they were not in the jail this morning. Their next court appearance is set for Friday.
