Corruption probe into Swedish minister's apartment deal
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Sweden's top anti-corruption prosecutor says he'll investigate whether bribery laws were broken when Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom accepted a rent-controlled Stockholm apartment from a labor union.
Wallstrom has been criticized in Sweden after tabloid Aftonbladet reported last week that she had received a rental contract from the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union for an apartment it owns.
Such contracts are in short supply and people normally have to wait at least 15 years to get one.
Critics questioned whether a high-ranking Cabinet minister should accept such favors from a powerful union and lobby group.
Chief prosecutor Alf Johansson said Tuesday he would investigate whether Wallstrom's deal breached Swedish bribery laws.
Wallstrom has said she's done nothing wrong and that union officials assured her they weren't giving her any special treatment.
