U.S. Legal Sector Loses 800 Jobs in June

The legal services sector shed 800 jobs in June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of people employed in the legal industry nationwide fell from 1,122,200 people in May, to 1,121,400 in June, according to jobs figures reported earlier this month.
The total number of people employed in the legal sector accounts for lawyers and legal professionals who are on the payroll, including paralegals and secretaries.
The legal industry had about 7,500 jobs less this June than it did the year before, according to the bureau’s figures.
The monthly figures are preliminary and are often adjusted in future reports.
The downturn in the legal sector came while the broader economy saw modest growth. Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 223,000 in June, compared with an average monthly gain of 250,000 over the past year, according to the bureau.
Employment in professional and business services increased by 64,000 last month, which was a little higher than the sector’s average monthly gain of 57,000 over the past year.
Kent Zimmermann, a law firm consultant, downplayed the decline in the legal sector and said 800 is a relatively small number of jobs compared to the total, and that the figures go up and down over time.
Bruce MacEwen, another law firm consultant, said the numbers may not tell the whole story, and that when gauging the financial health of the industry, one might look at money spent on legal services, rather than the total number of people employed.
“Law firm employment could shrink while the sector overall grows,” he said.
