Grandma stopped depositing her VA checks in December 2008. Employees at her bank stated they felt uneasy about the "friend" who regularly accompanied grandma to cash those checks. The day grandma was admitted to a Nursing Home with a diagnosis of dementia on the advice of her PCP she complained to us that the "friend" had been "talking rough" to her stating that her house was "his" house & that she HAD to buy him a car. The "friend" who had no key broke into grandma's house looking for money, stole her handgun & ??? while we were still at the NH with her. Grandmas KELS assessment stated she had no capability to manage her own finances or even write a personal check & although the friend's attorney had a copy he still had grandma sign a Revocation of the Durable Power Of Attorney she had given her daughter years before when she was taken to his office. At another bank the staff never bothered to question grandma cashing out a $12,000+ CD from which no withdrawals had been made since 1999 to open a checking account at a much lower interest rate even though her POA/daughter & her son were also listed as owners on that account. According to grandma checks were written to the "friend" & his attorney. Several months later $7000 was moved from grandma's savings to open a new checking account which the bank agreed to close. At the end of it all the "friend" admitted to an Adult Protective Services Investigator to having altered grandmas medications all along, he refused to take her to her physical therapy appointments & started taking her to a new doctor with only him as a contact so her daughter could get no information about her health. I found in grandmas medical records where the "friend" had signed as the responsible party but never had her prescriptions filled or took her back to the doctor for follow-up appointments. These ARE all crimes yet no one bothered to SPEAK UP! After the fact no one would fully investigate or prosecute the "friend" or his attorney in this case.
