A 65-year-old Monterey financial assistant was sentenced on Tuesday to three years probation for financial elder abuse, Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo announced.
Sandee Palmer Larkin, formerly of Monterey, will also be required to serve 120 days in jail.
Larkin owned Larkin Financial and Assistance Services where she balanced the victim’s bank account and paid bills in a timely manner. The victim, a woman over the age of 65, authorized Larkin to write checks, including Larkin’s salary.
Without authorization, Larkin increased her pay for several months, ultimately taking money she hadn’t earned.
A request by Larkin’s attorney to reduce the crime to a misdemeanor was denied. Although Larkin has repaid the victim $8,790, Monterey County Superior Court Jude Larry Hayes focused on the fact that Larkin violated her position of trust both professionally and personally since she had known the victim for a long time.
Professional fiduciaries are licensed by the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Larkin doesn’t currently hold a license, according to the website, www.fiduciary.ca.gov.
Anyone who believes he or she may have been a victim of elder abuse should contact local law enforcement or Adult Protective Services at 831-883-7565.
The DA’s Office Elder Abuse Unit prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Monterey Police Department.
