Judge declines to move legal dispute between MLK Center and his estate to federal court

ATLANTA — A federal judge says a state court should hear a dispute between the estate of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and a nonprofit devoted to his memory.
King’s estate filed a complaint Aug. 28 in an Atlanta court asking a judge to stop The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change from using his image, likeness and memorabilia.

The estate is run by King’s sons, Martin Luther King III and Dexter King, while The King Center is run by King’s daughter, Bernice King.
The King Center argued the case belongs in federal court because it deals with federal copyright law.
The judge said his decision was a close one but he decided a Georgia court has jurisdiction.
