Family faked death to cheat me (JM)
An old woman who was buried 20 years ago may have to be exhumed for DNA testing to bring closure to a family dispute to reveal who is the rightful claimant to assets she left behind.
The matter is being investigated by The Fraud Squad as there are inconsistencies in the last will and testament made by the deceased.
Interestingly, THE STAR was provided with two death certificates, each recording different dates for the deceased.
The first death certificate claims that the woman died on October 13, 1988 at The Kingston Public Hospital while the other lists her date of death as March 1993 in St Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, who says she is the granddaughter of the deceased, claims she is the rightful beneficiary of the largesse left behind but alleges other relatives formulated a deadly plot to deny her what is rightfully hers.
She says only a DNA test will prove that she and the deceased are related which will erase all uncertainties.
“Somebody said they would take $100,000, but the funeral home said they want $300,000,” she said.
Elizabeth who is in fear for her life alleges that her grandmother was kidnapped by her son(her uncle) and hidden.
She claims he then faked the woman’s death and forged documents to show that she was dead, so that all her possessions would be left to him.
“He did it with other people, some of them are relatives and some are strangers,” she claims.
When the fabricated documents were completed, the woman was allegedly killed for real. Therefore, erasing any record of the deceased having actually named her granddaughter as her heir.
Detective Inspector Jacqueline Dodd of The Fraud Squad explained that the complainant, “just made the report. We’re not sure it has reached that point where exhumation will be done. We definitely need to verify that there’s some truth to her story.”
“We need to make checks with the Registrar of Death and Birth. Where we are at now, it is to verify that the documents are authentic. Our role now is to do some investigation to see if she is to get some redress.”
