Ten people were confirmed dead after a fire broke out at an orthopedic hospital early Friday morning in the southwestern Japan city of Fukuoka, with the victims believed to be eight patients and two staffers, police said.
Of a total of 17 people in the hospital at the time of the breakout, which was reported around 2:20 a.m., two escaped on their own. One elderly woman was the first to be confirmed dead, while nine people had been in cardiac or respiratory arrest, the local fire department said. Five others sustained injuries, they said.
The four-story building, which has one basement floor, was burning intensely on the ground floor when firefighters arrived, the department said. The fire was extinguished about two and a half hours later.
