Return rush peaks following "Bon" holidays
TOKYO, Aug. 17, Kyodo
Railway stations, expressways and airports around Japan were crowded Saturday with travelers returning to population centers after spending "Bon" holidays in their hometowns or abroad.
Reserved seats of the Tohoku and Tokaido Shinkansen bullet trains, respectively connecting Tokyo with northeastern Japan and Osaka, were almost fully booked throughout the day, while the number of passengers on nonreserved cars of some trains exceeded the number of seats by some 30 percent.
Domestic flights to Tokyo's Haneda airport were also almost fully occupied, with Japan Airlines flights on average 95 percent full and All Nippon Airways flights 92 percent, according to the airlines.
