"Unprecedented heavy rain" lashes western Japan

TOKYO/YAMAGUCHI, Japan, July 28, Kyodo
Parts of western Japan were deluged from the predawn hours Sunday, prompting the Japanese weather agency to warn of "unprecedented heavy rain" in some areas and urge caution against flooding and mudslides.

The warning issued for Yamaguchi and Shimane prefectures is equivalent to the "special warning" designation that the Japan Meteorological Agency plans to introduce from Aug. 30 when the risk of a serious disaster is high, agency officials said.

The agency also said thunderstorms may occur in the Tohoku region in the northeast through the night.
