Dan King, former Bessemer Cutoff judge, indicted on theft charge in Calhoun County
King was indicted by a Calhoun County grand jury earlier this month on the theft of property first degree charge stemming from theft of money from a law firm.
Efforts to reach King or his attorney today have so far been unsuccessful.
The March 4 indictment states that King, sometime between April 1, 2011 and Feb. 25, 2013, knowingly obtained, "by deception", control over more than $2,500 that was the property of the law firm Stewart & Stewart P.C. The exact amount of money was unknown to the grand jury, according to the indictment.
No other details were available.
Sheila Crumley Field, a prosecutor with the Calhoun County District Attorneys Office, said she could not comment on an on-going case.
According to its website, the Stewart & Stewart law firm, has offices in Anniston and Bessemer.
Efforts to reach someone with the Stewart & Stewart law firm for comment were unsuccessful.
King, 57, of McCalla, was arrested March 12 on the charge and was immediately released after posting $10,000 bond, according to court records.
The Alabama Court of the Judiciary in September 2010 had suspended King for 60 days without pay and publicly reprimanded him for setting aside the rape conviction of a man whom he had represented 15 years earlier, and for publicly criticizing a fellow judge.
King had lost his re-election bid in the June 2010 Democratic primary before the suspension.
