KUSA - A Commerce City couple has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $200,000 from their grandparents.
William Young, 41, and his wife, Karen Young, 42, both pleaded guilty to theft of an at-risk adult.
In September 2008, Young's grandmother Francies Gibbs, 93, and her husband Harland Gibbs, 92, moved into an assisted living home.
Two years later, Westminster police were called by an elder law/probate attorney regarding what appeared to be theft from the couple's accounts.
Young had power of attorney for his grandmother, Francies, between June 2009 and December 2010. Investigators discovered that Young and his wife emptied the Gibbs' bank accounts and used their credit cards for personal use.
Police say credit card receipts showed they used the money to pay their $6,000 monthly mortgage, along with cable and utility bills for their Commerce City home.
Records show the money was also used for cell phone bills, tickets to Las Vegas and various stores.
In total, the Youngs' stole $227,000.
Francies Gibbs passed away in January 2013. Harland Gibbs passed away in November 2010, before the case was filed.
William Young faces a four to 12 year sentence. Karen Young faces one to three years in prison.
Both will be sentenced May 13 in Jefferson County.
