Federal prosecutors say a South Texas judge was investigating an alleged conspiracy by the local district attorney to make money off related murder and civil cases when he took a bribe to stay quiet about the scheme.
In documents filed Friday in the case of Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos, federal prosecutors say Villalobos and his former law partner and co-defendant, Eddie Lucio, orchestrated the resolution of the two cases, both in the court of former state District Judge Abel Limas.
Prosecutors charge that Lucio shared about $80,000 of his $200,000 in legal fees with Villalobos, who put him on the case. Together they gave Limas about $10,000 to keep him quiet.
Villalobos and Lucio face racketeering and extortion charges. Limas has pleaded guilty to racketeering in another case.
