SHIRKEY VOTES TO PROTECT SENIOR CITIZENS FROM FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION, ABUSE

May 30, 2012

Michigan senior citizens will be better protected from financial exploitation and other forms of abuse and neglect under legislation overwhelmingly approved this afternoon by the state House, Rep. Mike Shirkey announced.

The multi-bill legislative package, which was approved with bipartisan support, helps curb a variety of abuses against older adults.

"This broad-based proposal will help stop anyone who intentionally tries to prey on Michigan senior citizens, whether through financial exploitation or outright physical abuse," said Shirkey, R-Clarklake. "Targeting vulnerable senior citizens is repugnant, and we must do all we can to protect Michigan's growing older population."

Shirkey is hosting a Senior Brigade event in Jackson on Monday, June 18. The free event for seniors will include presentations on identity theft and phone and mail scams. Contact Shirkey's office at (517) 373-1775, or e-mail him at MikeShirkey@house.mi.gov for more information.

The senior protection package creates new penalties for embezzling from a vulnerable adult; prevents heirs who committed abuse or neglect against the elder person from inheriting the estate or becoming the executor; and creates escalating penalties for various types of racketeering and fraud.

The bills also protect seniors from physical abuse by creating a statewide protocol for investigating elder abuse, and establish an emergency response system similar to the Amber Alert for anyone at least 60 years old who is missing and believed incapable of returning to their residence without assistance.
