A veteran Chicago police property custodian was recently accused of stealing jewelry and other items from police custody.

A Cook County judge ordered Pamela Brown, 55, held on $40,000 bail on March 6. Brown, of the 10000 block of South Emerald Avenue, was charged with felony theft and official misconduct for taking items from a police evidence facility, according to police.

Brown is a $57,8282-a-year property custodian whose worked for the city since May 1990, according to court records.

A police spokesman couldn't provide additional details.

Brown, who remains in Cook County Jail, demanded a trial at her initial hearing and is expected to return to court next month for a motion hearing, court records show.

Court records didn't indicate whether Brown had hired her own attorney.

Editor's note: The Chicago Police Dept. does not have a monopoly on this type of theft. The property of helpless wards is looted just as soon as the court harpies of the Probate Court of Cook County arrive at their unguarded residences. A prime example of this is a Luger pistol belonging to a ward that "disappeared" from his home. The court knew about this and yet did not report the theft of a dangerous weapon.  Lucius Verenus, Schoolmaster, ProbateSharks.com
