Emperor leaves hospital after heart surgery

Emperor leaves hospital after heart surgery

The Emperor has left hospital and returned to the Imperial Palace, 15 days after an operation to improve the blood circulation in his heart.

He left the University of Tokyo Hospital at around 2:30 PM on Sunday, accompanied by the Empress.

He was carrying a bouquet of flowers as he got into a car. Doctors and other medical staff saw him off at the hospital gate.

X-rays and other medical tests indicate that the Emperor is regaining physical strength as his heart is in better condition than before the surgery. He has shown no signs of arrhythmia.

His blood pressure and temperature were at normal levels in tests carried out on Sunday morning.

The Emperor will continue his rehabilitation at the palace for a while.

He hopes to attend a ceremony on March 11th to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

But the Imperial Household Agency says it will cautiously monitor the Emperor's health before making a decision on his attendance.
