Liliane Bettencourt’s Guardianship Status Unchanged

By Jennifer Weil

PARIS — A French appeals court today turned down the request by Liliane Bettencourt to have her guardianship status changed, a spokesman for the family of her daughter, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, confirmed.

The 89-year-old L’Oréal heiress appealed the decision made in mid-October by the guardianship judge of Courbevoie, France, who had placed her under the protection of her grandson, Jean-Victor Meyers. At that time, Bettencourt’s holdings were put under the guardianship of Meyers, plus Bettencourt Meyers and her other grandson, Nicolas Meyers. Bettencourt had hoped for reinforced guardianship, which is less restrictive.

The request was originally examined in mid-December by the appeals court in Versailles, France, which deferred its decision until today.

The Bettencourt affair was thrust back into the spotlight less than a year after the mother and daughter declared a cease-fire, in December 2010, in their long-running tussle.

Bettencourt Meyers had made numerous requests for her mother’s guardianship protection during the saga, which began in December 2007. Bettencourt Meyers at that time brought a lawsuit against photographer François-Marie Banier. She alleged he exploited the weakness of Bettencourt, who gave him assets valued at about 1 billion euros, or $1.28 billion at current exchange.
