Iran wary of Japan's response to oil sanctions

The Iranian government has yet to officially respond to Japan's announcement of gradually reducing crude oil imports from that country.

Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi made the announcement on Thursday after meeting US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in Tokyo. Geithner sought Japan's cooperation with US sanctions, which aim to block Iran's oil trade by barring transactions between Iran's central bank and foreign firms.

Iran's state-run television reported that despite Azumi's announcement, Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told his French counterpart during bilateral talks on Friday that the government has not yet decided on its policy for cooperation with US sanctions on Iran.

The TV report included commentary that Japan is carefully considering its course of action, taking into account a possible negative impact on the country's economy.

The commentary praised countries like China, India, and Turkey for not giving in to US pressure, saying that these nations are reluctant to reduce oil imports from Iran.

Iran seems to be carefully watching to what extent Japan would keep pace with the United States.

Japan has long been friendly to Iran and depends on the country for nearly 10 percent of its crude oil imports.
