"Choco pies" for N.Korea

"Choco pies" for N.Korea

Some lucky North Koreans may be in for an unexpected treat this coming lunar holiday, as balloons carrying a prized chocolate sweet have been floated toward the North by a group of defectors based in the South.

More than 20 North Korean defectors gathered in Ganghwa Island near the demilitarized zone on Friday. They launched balloons laden with packs of "choco pies" toward North Korea. The event was staged ahead of the Korean Lunar New Year holiday next week.

The defectors sent up some 100 kilograms of the "pies" -- small round chocolate cakes -- which are widely liked by South Koreans.

The pies are also gaining popularity in the North. They are distributed among workers at the Kaesong industrial complex. The facility is jointly run by North and South Korea.

In North Korean markets, the pies can be exchanged for rice and other food, in place of foreign currency.

The North Korean who organized the event says the group decided to send the choco pies as they convey a clear message that such aid comes from South Korea.

The group plans to send more choco pies to North Korea.
