3 North Korean drifters sent back to home
Three North Korean men who drifted into Japanese waters on a small boat have arrived in the Chinese city of Dalian, where officials from their country received them.
The men wanted to return home, so the Japanese and North Korean governments made arrangements to repatriate them. They departed Monday from an airport in southwestern Japan.
Japan Coast Guard officers found the men in a wooden boat Friday, drifting in waters off Shimane Prefecture.
The North Koreans said they left home in mid-December to go fishing, but lost control of their vessel when the engine failed.
They denied they had defected from their country and said they wished to return.
The Coast Guard transferred the men from its patrol vessel to one of its bases before sending them to Fukuoka Airport.
