Attorney: Will County mental health counselor facing sentencing commits suicide

A former Will County mental health counselor scheduled to plead guilty and be sentenced for soliciting an undercover police officer he thought was a 13-year-old girl committed suicide Tuesday, his attorney said today in court.

John Martynus, 40, of Plainfield allegedly arranged to meet the girl at a Subway restaurant in Crete for sex last December. He repeatedly told the officers who arrested him there that his life was over, records show.

This morning his attorney Donald Dewilkins told a judge that Martynus' father called him and told him Martynus had killed himself.

Some in the courtroom gasped at hearing the news.
