BARRINGTON — It’s getting hard to find good help in Barrington, where two caregivers have been arrested, one for allegedly burglarizing apartments in the building where he worked, the other for fraudulent use of her employer’s credit cards.
Dennis Ablang, 44, of Buffalo Grove was arrested by Barrington police, authorities said, after he was hired as a caregiver for an area resident, then allegedly stole more than $60,000 worth of jewelry from residents of the building where he worked.
Ablang was arrested following the investigation of a burglary Dec. 11 and a theft in October, both in the 1000 block of Garlands Lane. Jewelry was taken in both incidents, $38,200 worth in one case and $24,000 worth in the other, police said. Follow-up by investigation led to finding additional victims.
Ablang was serving as the private caregiver for a resident in that building, police said. Since his arrest, a considerable amount of jewelry has been recovered and is being returned to the victims, according to police.
Ablang is charged with four counts of burglary, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, one count of possession of methamphetamine and two counts of theft. He is being held in the Lake County Jail on $100,000 bond, and police say more charges could be pending.
On Dec. 6, Gina Schoening, 46, of Elgin was charged with one felony count of driving while having a revoked license. That is usually a misdemeanor, but was upgraded to a Class 3 Felony because her driving privileges were revoked for a prior DUI arrest.
Police were investigating Schoening because of a complaint from the family of a Barrington resident she was hired to care for. The family alleged Schoening used the victim’s credit card for unauthorized purchases. As part of investigation, Schoening has been charged by Elgin police for the credit card offenses.
She was being held on $25,000 bond on the driving charge.

Editor's note: A similar event took place regarding the Estate of Alice R. Gore, deceased, a ward of the Probate Court of Cook County in Judge Kawamoto's courtroom. A caregiver and relative removed documents and other valuables from Alice's apartment. This was duly reported to the court on the court record by Alice's daughter and nothing was done to punish the perpetrators. Lucius Verenus, Schoolmaster, ProbateSharks.com
